The first Execom of IEEE Kerala PES Chapter will be held at 10 am on Saturday 5 March 2017 at the IEEE Section Office, Ambujavilasam Road, Trivandrum. All members are requested to attend the meeting without fail.
The list of Execom with their respective roles and a tentative list of programmes for the year are mailed to the members. All the members are requested to please present briefly for five minutes a program for the year in their respective areas of allocation.

PES Kerala Chapter jointly with EEE dept. of TKM Institute of Technology held a quiz competition for EEE students of Kerala on Feb 23rd as part of Vaibhav ’15, the tech fest EEE dept. It was a two level contest. Prelims with 50 questions (30 from Power, 10 from G K & 10 from current affairs). 41 students participated in the contest.
For the finals, 5 groups were formed from the top 9 students. Dr Premlet B of TKM College of Engg was the Quiz master.
First Prize : Rs 5000/- Second Prize : Rs 3000/- & Third Prize : Rs 2000/-
First & Second Prize was sponsored by KSEB officers Assn.

PES Kerala Chapter jointly with Kerala State Electricity Board Engineers Association conducted a paper presentation Contest on the topic “Trends and Challenges in Smart Grid Technology” on March 2015. Finals were conducted from among the winners of the district level contest .
Trends and Challenges in Smart Grid Technology
Smart Grid is a modernized and evolved electrical grid that uses analogue or digital information and communications technology to gather and act on information, such as information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity.
The Smart Grid represents an unprecedented opportunity to move the energy industry into a new era and will contribute to our economic and environmental health. The benefits associated with the Smart Grid include:
- More efficient transmission of electricity
- Quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances
- Reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower power costs for consumers
- Reduced peak demand, which will also help lower electricity rates
- Increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems
- Better integration of customer-owner power generation systems, including renewable energy systems
- Improved security
Smart grids will make use of new design concepts and advanced materials in system components like transformers and circuit breakers to improve efficiency, safety and operational performance. Widespread use of power electronic devices will help maximize performance of existing assets and make the grid more resilient in the event of disruptions. In general, smart grid technology can be grouped into five key areas; Integrated communications, Sensing and measurement which includes Smart meters and Phasor measurement units, Advanced components like Distributed power flow control and Smart power generation using advanced components, Advanced control and Improved interfaces and decision support. Implementation of smart grids will lead to reliable operation and effective performance of distributed generations based on renewable energy resources, as well as enabling better use of existing power stations and improving the efficiency of industries. Moreover, this technology causes better operation of power grids and addresses the power quality issues through using advanced controllers, power electronic equipments and economical and managerial decisions making
Electrical systems will undergo a major evolution, improving reliability and reducing electrical losses, capital expenditures and maintenance costs. The smart grid is the future for electrical systems, as it is designed to meet the four major electricity requirements of our global society: capacity, reliability, efficiency and sustainability.

PES Kerala Chapter jointly with PES Student Branch Chapter of College of Engineering Munnar organized the PES Student Members meet on Jan 24 th & 25th at College of Engineering, Munnar.

On Jan 25th forenoon, Mr Simon Akkara, Dy Chief Engineer, KSEB Ltd took two sessions on Smart Grid Initiatives.
State level finals was conducted at KMCT College of Engineering, Calicut on Dec 22nd along with the LINK camp.
The three Hub level winners and the winners from IEEE second year student members competed for the finals. Quiz Kerala team member Mr. Snehaj Sreenivas was the Quiz master. Section SAC Chair Prof Muhammed Kasim, Principal Dr P Janardhanan, Section S R Mr Kiran Rajmohan were present for the Quiz finals. Quiz started at 11.30 am and ended by 1.30 pm. Prizes were given by Prof Muhammed Kasim, Dr Janardhanan & Mr Snehaj Sreenivas

Report on National Seminar at NIT Calicut
Solar Power Plants for Residential, Commercial Utility and Off-grid Applications
The Two day National Seminar on Solar Power Plants for Residential, Commercial Utility and Off-grid Applications was held at National Institute of Technology, Calicut in association with Industrial Power Group of Department of Electrical Engineering NIT C, IEEE PES Kerala Section and IEEE Power and Energy Society, NITC chapter on December 17-18, 2014. The Chief Guest of the seminar Emeritus Professor Dr. Chem. V. Nayar, Curtin University of Technology, Australia; Managing Director, Regen Group Pty Ltd, Australia; Director, Radiant Solar Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, an Academician and an Entrepreneur shared his experiences on Solar energy facts, solar farms, topologies for various power converters, grid interconnection issues and applications of solar PV systems in residential and commercial utilities.
Mr. Christo George, Chairman and Managing Director, HYKON Group of Companies and his technical team shared their experience on Solar PV Installations- Challenges and Issues.
Mr. C. M. Varughese from IGATECH Industrial Electronics Pvt. Ltd. and his technical team demonstrated their industrial ideas regarding off-grid, hybrid solar installations and Solar Inverters.
Professor, Dr. Ashok S. and Assistant Professor Dr. Kumaravel S., Electrical Engineering Department, NITC working in the area of hybrid solar and wind systems with experience in installation of 1kWp solar panels, delivered lectures and handled hands-on sessions and also shared their experiences with the participants.
Nearly 100 participants from all over the country consisting of Industry personnel, Academicians, Research scholars and other distinguished delegates attended this seminar.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. Ashok S. (Branch Advisor), Dr. Kumaravel S. (Branch Counselor) and Mr. Rohit K. Mathew (Branch Secretary) IEEE Power and Energy Society Student Chapter, NIT Calicut.
