Major Events & Activities

1. INTERNATIONAL LECTURE SERIES-SESSION 1

Mathematical Modelling and Dynamic Analysis of DC Sources for Grid-Forming Inverters in Renewable Energy Systems.

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter conducted the first session of its International Lecture Series on 10th April 2025 via Google Meet, featuring Prof. Eduardo I. Ortiz-Rivera from the University of Puerto Rico System as the keynote speaker. Prof. Eduardo delivered an insightful talk on the mathematical modelling and dynamic analysis of DC sources for grid-forming inverters (GFMI) in renewable energy systems. He discussed the role of DC sources, GFMI design, microgrid relevance, and ongoing research at UPRM.The session began with a welcome address by Dr. Boby Philip and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rahul Satheesh. With 30 participants, the event included an engaging Q&A session and served as a valuable technical knowledge-sharing platform.

2. WOW 6.0 (Women of Wisdom) Tech Talk #3

IEEE PES Kerala Chapter along with IEEE WIE AG Kerala, IEEE Women in Power Kerala & R10, IEEE PES SBC JECC organised the third session of the WOW 6.0 Tech Talk Series focused on how digital technologies can support Net Zero targets.

Dr. Surekha Deshmukh delivered a compelling keynote on the role of IoT, AI, and data analytics in transforming energy systems for a sustainable future. She emphasized the importance of grid agility, climate risk prediction, and student participation in sustainability innovation. The session concluded with a vibrant Q&A on clean tech entrepreneurship and emerging areas like carbon accounting and green software. The talk reflected WOW 6.0's mission to amplify women's voices in tech and foster actionable insights for sustainable development.

3. IEEE PES DAY Ambassadors Training Session

The IEEE PES Day Ambassadors Training Session was held on 20th April 2025, bringing together around 18 ambassadors from across the section. Led by Er. Nithin V M, the session covered the roles and responsibilities of PES Day Ambassadors, along with guidance for planning impactful events. Anvitha Vinod, Women in Power Student Representative, emphasized PES Day's significance and shared valuable insights, including event planning tips and lessons from past editions. A tree-planting event at CET PES SBC was highlighted as a model initiative.

The session also launched a special Membership Development Call and concluded at 7:45 PM, equipping ambassadors with the knowledge and motivation to lead successful PES Day 2025 initiatives.

4. INTERNATIONAL LECTURE SERIES-SESSION 2

The second session of the International Lecture Series, held on 21st April 2025, featured Dr. Harish Krishnamoorthy, who delivered a compelling talk on the role of power electronics in energy sustainability and conservation. The session began with a welcome and presidential address by Dr. Boby Philip, followed by an engaging presentation rich in research insights and practical relevance. Attended by professionals from various domains, the event included a vibrant Q&A session that fostered active interaction. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rahul Satheesh, marking the end of an informative and impactful lecture.

5. PES Day Tree Plantation Drive-Chapter Level Inauguration

In celebration of IEEE PES Day 2025 and Earth Day, IEEE PES SBC CET, in collaboration with the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, organized a Tree Plantation Drive on 22nd April 2025 at the Electrical PG Block, CET. The event began with a cake-cutting ceremony, followed by the inauguration of the plantation drive by Dr. Boby Philip, Chair of IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, who planted Cassia fistula (Kanikonna) saplings. Faculty members including Dr. Lal Priya and Dr. Harikumar, along with enthusiastic students and volunteers, actively participated.

The event marked the chapter-level launch of PES Day 2025 celebrations and encouraged other IEEE PES Student Branch Chapters across Kerala to organize similar sustainability initiatives. The drive concluded with a strong message of environmental responsibility and collective action.

6. Watt-A-Pitch, a 48-hour online idea pitching competition

As part of PES Day 2025 celebrations, the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter organized Watt-A-Pitch, a 48-hour online idea pitching competition exclusively for IEEE PES Student Members. Centered on the theme “Clean Energy, Smarter Grids, Better Lives,” the competition invited innovative ideas in the energy domain, ranging from renewable solutions to smart grid technologies. Submissions were collected via an online form, ensuring a simple and accessible format that encouraged wide participation.

All participants received E-Certificates in recognition of their creativity and contribution. The event successfully fostered student innovation and promoted active engagement in sustainable energy initiatives across the Kerala Chapter.

7. IEEE PES Day 2025 Membership Development Session #1

As part of PES Day 2025 celebrations, a Membership Development Session was conducted by IEEE PES Kerala Chapter in collaboration with IEEE PES SBC CE Perumon on 22nd April 2025.The session was led by Ms. Fisa Fathima Feroze, who shared valuable insights into the benefits of IEEE PES membership, including access to technical resources, global networks, and professional growth opportunities.

With 49 participants (16 members and 33 non-members), the session successfully raised awareness about PES and its impact on career development in the power and energy sector. Attendees provided positive feedback, marking the session as informative and inspiring.

8. IEEE PES Day 2025 Membership Development Session #2

As part of PES Day 2025 celebrations, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter in association with IEEE PES SBC CECTL Perumon conducted Membership Development Session #2 on 23rd April 2025. The session was led by Jes Gigo, Membership Development Coordinator, Kochi Hub. Jes highlighted the benefits of IEEE PES membership, including networking opportunities, mentorship, leadership roles, and career growth within the power and energy sector. He also emphasized the importance of contributing to technological advancement for societal benefit—core to the mission of IEEE and PES. An engaging Q&A session followed, where attendees actively participated, with Jes offering clear and encouraging responses. The session concluded at 9:00 PM IST, leaving participants well-informed and motivated to explore deeper involvement in IEEE PES.

9. Urjja Seva - Energy Management Awareness Program

As part of PES Day 2025 celebrations, Urjja Seva, an energy management awareness program, was conducted on 23rd April 2025 by IEEE PES SBC CCET in collaboration with the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter.

The event aimed to promote sustainable energy practices and create awareness on efficient energy management among students. The session began with an inaugural address and technical talk by Asst. Prof. Vishnu S, covering everyday energy-saving techniques and electricity bill analysis. This was followed by a hands-on session led by senior IEEE PES students using an Energy Efficiency Demonstration Kit, Arduino-based current measurements, and a comparison of lighting technologies. Post-lunch, student teams presented on energy management and carbon neutrality, followed by a keynote session by Dr. Sherly P Anand, whose enlightening talk on carbon neutrality sparked engaging discussions during the Q&A. The event concluded with feedback collection, a vote of thanks by Sreya B, and a group photo session, wrapping up a highly impactful day. With 39 student participants, Urjja Seva successfully fulfilled its goal of equipping students to extend energy awareness to the broader community.

10. AI–Power Edge Innovations in Energy and E-Mobility — Session 2

On 29th April 2025, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with the Amrita School of Artificial Intelligence, hosted the second session of the AI–Power Edge Innovations in Energy and E-Mobility series. The session, titled “Towards Transparent Data-Driven Decision and Control Systems in Power Systems,” featured Dr. Ricardo Bessa from INESC TEC.After a welcome address by Dr. Boby Philip, Chair of IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, Dr. Bessa presented an insightful talk on the role of data transparency in enhancing power system control.

He emphasized the need for interpretable and reliable data-driven decisions, highlighting distributed and hierarchical control strategies as key solutions for modern, intelligent grid systems.The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where Dr. Bessa addressed participant queries with clarity and depth. The session wrapped up with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rahul Satheesh, Secretary, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, marking a successful and enlightening session for all attendees.

11. Employment Opportunities In Electrical And Electronics Engineering

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter organized a career-oriented session titled “Employment Opportunities in Electrical and Electronics Engineering” on 12th May 2025, featuring Major Dr. P. S. Raghavendran, Principal of Kongu Polytechnic College, Erode. The event was hosted by Prof. Vishnu S, Educational Activities Coordinator, PES Kerala Chapter.Dr. Raghavendran shared valuable insights into the diverse career avenues available for EEE graduates, ranging from traditional roles in power generation, transmission, and distribution to emerging fields like electric vehicles, smart grids, energy storage, automation, and IoT.

He also stressed the importance of programming skills (such as Python and C++) for engineers in the evolving job market.The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students posed career-related questions and received practical advice from the speaker. The session wrapped up at 8:00 PM IST with a vote of thanks, leaving participants better informed and motivated about their future career paths.

12. ELEVATE – Your Career with IEEE Senior Member Grade

IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE WiE AG Kerala, IEEE Women in Power Kerala, IEEE WiP Region 10, and IEEE PES SBC CoET, organized the second session of WOW 6.0 on 22nd March 2025. The session, titled “Energy Management: Innovations, Challenges, and Future Prospects,” featured Rushali Thakkar, Student Activity Chair, IEEE Benelux Section and Vice Chair, IEEE PES HAC 2025. With 82 participants, the event delved into smart energy systems, addressing the integration of IoT, AI, and data analytics in modern energy management. Opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Nafeesa K and Dr. Boby Philip, with additional insights from Prof. Deepa A K on youth and women-led initiatives in the energy sector.

The session highlighted key topics such as demand-side management, decentralized grids, dynamic pricing, and the socio-economic impact of sustainable energy transitions. Hosted by Amaya Gireeshan, WiP Student Representative, the session concluded with an engaging Q&A, leaving attendees inspired to explore innovative pathways in energy management.

13. WoW 6.0 Session 4

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE Women in Power Kerala, IEEE WIE AG Kerala Section, IEEE Women in Power Region 10, and IEEE PES SBC CET, conducted the fourth session of the WOW 6.0 Tech Talk Series on May 17th, 2025 at 7:00 PM IST. The enlightening one-hour session was delivered by Ms. Megha Ben, Project Manager at Siemens, North Carolina, USA, and IEEE CS Board of Governors Member (2024–2025).

The session was hosted by IP Rithika (PES Member). Ms. Megha Ben shared her professional journey, emphasizing how her active involvement with IEEE significantly contributed to her career advancement and global networking. She illustrated her experiences with visuals from various IEEE conferences and events, highlighting the power of professional engagement and learning through IEEE.A vibrant Q&A session followed, where participants engaged with the speaker, asking insightful questions. The enthusiastic participation and the speaker's thoughtful responses made this segment a highlight of the evening.

14. INTELLECT:Unlocking Research Potential

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter organized an informative online session titled “INTELLECT: Unlocking Research Potential” on May 26, 2025, from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM IST via Google Meet, with 35 participants including students and professionals.

The session, hosted by Amal Rosh (SLT KC), featured Ms. Deepika Bhule (Research Scholar, IIST Trivandrum) as the speaker. She provided valuable insights into writing a technical paper, covering aspects such as methodology, research skills, structuring, and key guidelines. A dynamic Q&A session followed, where several participants actively engaged with the speaker, making it the highlight of the event. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Noufal (YP KC), marking the end of a successful and interactive event.

15. Environmental Day Celebrations (Malabar Hub)

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE SB COET and IEEE SB MESCE, organized an impactful Environment Day celebration on June 5, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM IST at Arangettuparamba Senior Basic School, Thalassery, Kannur.The event began with an inaugural address by Dr. Rahul Satheesh (Secretary, PES Kerala Chapter), emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. Sahadiya (Malabar MDC Kerala Chapter) followed with a presentation on environmental issues, inspiring young minds to take action.

Tree Planting Ceremony: Participants planted saplings, symbolizing commitment to sustainability. Drawing Competition: Children expressed eco-friendly themes through creative artwork. Photo Session: A joyful conclusion with students, capturing the spirit of the celebration. The event was smoothly coordinated by Vidhu Krishnan (HSR, PES Kerala Chapter) and received enthusiastic participation, making it a memorable and meaningful initiative towards environmental awareness.

16. Environmental Day Celebrations (Travancore Hub)

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE SCT SB and IEEE CET SB, celebrated Environment Day on June 5, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM IST at Govt. LP School, Pangode, Thiruvananthapuram. The event began with an inaugural and awareness session, led by Fisa Feroze (MDC, Travancore Hub), emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. Insights were also shared by Dr. Boby Philip and Dr. Ajith Gopi from IEEE PES Kerala Chapter. A drawing competition followed, where students expressed their green ideas creatively. Prizes included chocolates, drawing kits, and participation pencils. T

he event concluded with a closing ceremony and a photo session capturing the enthusiasm of the young participants. Coordinated successfully, the event served as a meaningful platform to inspire environmental responsibility among children and was appreciated by all attendees.

17. Environmental Day Celebrations (Kochi Hub)

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE SB RSET and IEEE Toc H SB, organized an Environment Day celebration on June 5, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM IST at Albert School, Ernakulam. The event began with an awareness session led by Jes Gigo (MDC, Kochi Hub), focusing on environmental conservation. Er. Harikumar (Vice Chair, PES Kerala Chapter) graced the event, and Haritha (ECC, PES Kerala Chapter) coordinated the program.

Key highlights included: Drawing Competition: Students showcased their creativity; winners received chocolates and drawing kits, while all participants were gifted drawing pencils. Tree Planting Ceremony: Symbolized the commitment to a greener future. Closing Remarks & Photo Session: Participants shared their ideas on sustainability, concluding with a joyful photo session. The event was a successful initiative to inspire environmental responsibility among young minds and promote community engagement in sustainability efforts.

18.ENLIGHTEN: From Concept to Creation: A Practical Guide to Hardware Prototyping

As part of the ENLIGHTEN Webinar Series, IEEE PES Kerala Chapter hosted an engaging session led by Adarsh Raju, who shared practical insights into the hardware prototyping process—from concept development to real-world implementation. The session covered key topics such as component selection, schematic design, PCB development, and common pitfalls in prototyping. Participants actively interacted through a Q&A session, where the speaker addressed technical queries with clarity and depth.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks to the speaker and attendees. The session proved highly informative, offering participants real-world knowledge and encouraging hands-on exploration in hardware development.

19. WOW 6.0: SESSION 5

The third session of the AI PowerEdge webinar series was successfully conducted on 25th June 2025 at 8:00 PM IST via Google Meet. The session was jointly organized by the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter in collaboration with the AI Innovations in Power, Energy, and Electric Vehicles thrust group of the Amrita School of AI, Coimbatore. The event brought together researchers, academicians, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, highlighting the interdisciplinary potential of AI in power systems.
The session featured an expert talk by Dr. Roger Alves de Oliveira, Postdoctoral Researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Netherlands. His presentation titled "Deep Learning for Pattern Recognition and Anomaly Detection in Power Quality Big Data" provided an insightful overview of how unsupervised deep learning techniques can be effectively applied to analyze vast amounts of power quality (PQ) data generated through continuous monitoring.

Dr. Roger illustrated the practical relevance of AI in energy systems with real-world examples, such as daily harmonic patterns in MV/LV networks, solar PV-related disturbances, operational variability in electric railways, and anomalies caused by geomagnetic interference. He emphasized the value of "learning from deep learning",where AI models assist in flagging critical data, and domain experts interpret the physical phenomena behind those patterns. The session was well-received, with active engagement from attendees during the interactive Q&A segment. Participants appreciated the speaker’s ability to demystify complex AI applications and present them in an energy systems context. The webinar concluded with closing remarks and a vote of thanks, reinforcing the need for continued collaborations at the intersection of AI and energy.

20 AI–Power Edge Innovations in Energy and E-Mobility — Session 3

The third session of the AI PowerEdge webinar series was successfully conducted on 25th June 2025 at 8:00 PM IST via Google Meet. The session was jointly organized by the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter in collaboration with the AI Innovations in Power, Energy, and Electric Vehicles thrust group of the Amrita School of AI, Coimbatore. The event brought together researchers, academicians, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, highlighting the interdisciplinary potential of AI in power systems.
