Dear IEEE PES Members,

The third quarter of 2025 was marked by impactful events like the Energy Transition Conclave, the PES YP Research Conclave, and insightful webinars, alongside the recognition and funding of our 27 High Performing Student Branch Chapters by the IEEE PES.

I am deeply grateful to our Professional Leaders Student Leadership Team and volunteers for driving this momentum; together, let us continue to innovate and lead.

Major Events & Activities

1. Powering the digital future : innovation, infrastructure and impact

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE SB CET, organized a panel discussion on “Powering the Digital Future: Innovation, Infrastructure, and Impact” on 02 October 2025. The session featured an expert panel comprising Dr. Boby Philip, Dr. Shivani Sharma, Mr. Pavan Penkey, Dr. Sreenu Sreekumar, and Dr. Rahul Satheesh. The discussion highlighted key themes shaping the digital energy landscape, including emerging innovations, the need for resilient and modern infrastructure, and the societal and industrial impact of large-scale digitalization. Panelists shared insights on smart grids, renewable integration, AI-driven energy systems, and the future of digital power technologies.

The event also featured an interactive Q&A session, offering participants valuable perspectives on current trends and career pathways in the evolving power and energy sector. Overall, the session served as an informative knowledge-sharing platform, strengthening collaboration and technical engagement within the IEEE community.

2. Get Published : Strategies that work

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with GSAC – IEEE Kerala Section, conducted a virtual session titled “Get Published: Strategies That Work” on 04 October 2025. The session was led by Dr. Arun K. Raj, who provided clear and practical insights into effective research writing, publication ethics, and strategies for successfully publishing in reputed journals and conferences.

The talk helped participants understand key aspects of structuring manuscripts, choosing suitable journals, responding to reviewer comments, and avoiding common pitfalls in academic publishing. The interactive Q&A session added further value, enabling attendees to clarify doubts and gain personalized guidance. Overall, the event served as an informative and motivating platform for students and researchers aiming to enhance their publication skills.

3.IEEE Day PES Quiz - SBC Level

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter conducted the IEEE Day PES Quiz – SBC Level on 07 October 2025 in physical mode. The event brought together enthusiastic student participants who competed in a series of power and energy–themed quiz rounds designed to test their technical knowledge and problem-solving skills.

The quiz fostered active participation, teamwork, and healthy competition among students, while also promoting awareness of IEEE Day and PES activities. The event concluded with the announcement of the top performers and acknowledgements to all participants for their spirited involvement. Overall, the quiz served as an engaging platform for learning and celebrating IEEE Day within the PES community.

4.Talk session - Joy of Volunteering: Explore the power of volunteering.

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE SB MESCE and IEEE SB COET, organized a virtual talk session titled “Joy of Volunteering: Explore the Power of Volunteering” on 07 October 2025. The session was handled by Mr. Aiman Sabique, who shared insightful perspectives on the personal and professional benefits of volunteering within IEEE.

He highlighted how volunteering helps students build leadership skills, expand networks, gain technical exposure, and make meaningful contributions to the community. The session encouraged participants to explore various IEEE avenues and understand how volunteering can shape a rewarding career path. With active engagement and interaction, the event inspired attendees to take up impactful roles in IEEE and broaden their horizons through volunteer-driven experiences.

5. AKPESSC 2025

The All Kerala Power & Energy Society Student Congress 2025, hosted by IEEE SB CET and organized by the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter on 10–11 October 2025, unfolded as a dynamic and intellectually rich gathering at the College of Engineering Trivandrum. The congress brought together students, researchers, and professionals from across Kerala, creating a collaborative atmosphere dedicated to exploring advancements in the power and energy sector. The event began with an inspiring inauguration ceremony on 10 October at 2:30 PM IST, graced by Dr. Ajith Gopi, Immediate Past Chair of the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, as the Chief Guest. His address set the tone for the congress, emphasizing innovation, sustainability, and the need for young engineers to engage deeply with the challenges and opportunities that define the rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Across the two days, AKPESSC 2025 featured an extensive range of workshops, technical sessions, and industrial visits designed to provide both conceptual depth and hands-on experience. One of the major highlights was the workshop “Solar Sparks – Build to Empower,” which offered participants the opportunity to engage directly with solar kit assembly and understand the engineering behind practical solar energy systems. In parallel, the workshop on “Applications of AI in Power & Energy Systems” provided a deep dive into the role of artificial intelligence in grid intelligence, predictive analytics, and system optimization. This session was led by Dr. Rahul Satheesh and Ms. Sreshtamol K. G. from the Amrita School of Artificial Intelligence, who shared insights from their ongoing research and demonstrated how AI-driven technologies are reshaping future power systems. Participants also benefited from multiple parallel workshop tracks, including a PCB designing workshop focused on circuit design fundamentals and tool-based implementation, as well as specialized sessions on AI applications within the power and energy domain. The diversity of workshops ensured that attendees could explore areas aligned with their interests while gaining exposure to emerging technologies.

A thought-provoking talk session by Dr. Achuthsankar added further depth to the event, offering broader reflections on technological evolution and the interdisciplinary skills required for the next generation of engineers. In addition to the technical sessions, AKPESSC 2025 offered valuable industry exposure through visits to two major institutions: the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). These visits enabled participants to observe large-scale operations, understand real-world power infrastructure, and interact with professionals working at the forefront of India’s energy and space technology domains.

The two-day congress provided an immersive experience that blended learning, innovation, and industry relevance. Through interactive discussions, hands-on sessions, and exposure to advanced facilities, AKPESSC 2025 succeeded in enriching the knowledge base of its participants and strengthening the spirit of collaboration within the PES student community. The event reinforced the vision of empowering young engineers to lead future advancements in the power and energy sector with creativity, technical competence, and a strong commitment to innovation.

6. Membership Development session

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE PES SBC LBSCEK, conducted a virtual MD Session on 13 October 2025, featuring an insightful presentation by Ms. Sahadiya. The session offered a deeper understanding of the purpose and impact of IEEE PES membership, outlining how students can leverage technical resources, global networking, and volunteering pathways to accelerate their professional growth.

Ms. Sahadiya emphasized the long-term value of active involvement in PES activities, explaining how engagement in projects, events, and leadership roles helps shape strong technical and interpersonal skills. The interactive discussion provided clarity on membership development strategies and encouraged participants to contribute meaningfully to their student branches. The session concluded with a renewed sense of motivation among attendees to make full use of the opportunities offered by IEEE PES.

7. AMPOWER – A Project Expo on Mission Net Zero 2070 (MDI Initiative)

The IEEE PES SBC MACE, in association with the IEEE IE/PELS Joint Chapter MACE and the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, organized AMPOWER – A Project Expo on Mission Net Zero 2070 on 18 October 2025. The expo, conducted as part of the Membership Development Initiative, showcased innovative student projects centered on sustainability, clean energy, and the long-term vision of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.

Participants presented creative solutions addressing renewable integration, energy efficiency, smart grid advancements, and low-carbon technologies. The event provided a technically rich platform for students to demonstrate their ideas, receive expert feedback, and understand real-world challenges in transitioning toward a carbon-neutral future. AMPOWER successfully fostered an atmosphere of innovation and awareness, inspiring students to contribute to India’s long-term climate goals through engineering-driven solutions.

8. Enlighten Webinar Series – Engineering Embedded Multimedia Systems: From Video Pipelines to Edge AI

The PVOLVE workshop on Solar PV System Design and Development was a one-day event that took place on the 10th of August 2025 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM (IST). It was organized by the IEEE SB MBCET in collaboration with the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, and the total number of participants for the event was 50. The session was conducted by Dr. Ajith Gopi (CEO & Founder, Zonergia Services Pvt. Ltd) and Mr. Anandu R. Krishnan (Senior Consultant - Renewable Energy). Dr. boby Philip also participated in this event.

The webinar covered critical aspects of embedded system architectures, video data handling, and real-time processing techniques, while also highlighting the role of AI at the edge for intelligent decision-making. Participants gained insights into both theoretical concepts and practical design considerations, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry applications. Through interactive discussions and Q&A, attendees were able to clarify technical challenges, understand emerging trends in multimedia and edge computing, and explore the potential of these technologies in modern power, energy, and smart infrastructure systems. The session provided a comprehensive platform for learning and inspired students and professionals to innovate in the field of embedded multimedia systems.

9. Membership Development session

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE PES SBC TKMCE, conducted a Membership Development (MD) session on 31 October 2025. The session focused on empowering students with an understanding of the benefits and opportunities offered by IEEE PES, emphasizing how active participation can enhance technical knowledge, leadership skills, and professional growth.

Participants were guided on how to leverage PES resources, engage in projects and workshops, and contribute to student branch activities to gain real-world experience. The session also highlighted strategies for building a strong professional network and maximizing the value of membership in shaping a career in power and energy engineering. Through interactive discussions, attendees were motivated to actively participate in IEEE initiatives, strengthening both their technical capabilities and their involvement within the PES community.

10.Membership Development session

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with IEEE PES SBC MITS and IEEE SB RIT, conducted a Membership Development (MD) session on 08 November 2025, led by Jes Gigo. The session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the value of IEEE PES membership and highlighted avenues for professional growth, skill development, and active engagement within the PES community.

Jes Gigo emphasized how involvement in workshops, projects, volunteering, and student branch activities can enhance technical knowledge, leadership abilities, and career prospects. The session also detailed strategies for effectively contributing to student branch initiatives and building meaningful professional networks through IEEE platforms. Interactive discussions and real-life examples shared during the session inspired attendees to actively leverage IEEE PES opportunities, fostering a stronger connection with the community and motivating them to participate in future technical and professional activities.

11. IEEE Day PES Quiz Finals

The IEEE Day PES Quiz Finals 2025 was conducted on 22 November 2025, organized by the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter in collaboration with IEEE PES SBC Rajagiri. The finals brought together top-performing teams from various student branches who had qualified through earlier rounds held at the SBC level. The event featured multiple stages of intellectually stimulating questions covering power and energy fundamentals, recent technological developments, sustainability initiatives, and IEEE PES activities. Participants demonstrated strong technical competence, quick problem-solving skills, and collaborative thinking throughout the competition.

The session also served as a platform for interaction among PES student members from across the state, promoting peer learning and fostering a spirit of healthy competition. The organizing team ensured a smooth flow of the event, with enthusiastic participation from students and volunteers alike. The Quiz Finals concluded on a high note, celebrating IEEE Day by encouraging knowledge sharing and strengthening the engagement of the student community within the Power & Energy Society.

12. Two-Day National Symposium on “Green Hydrogen for a Sustainable Future”

The Two-Day National Symposium on “Green Hydrogen for a Sustainable Future” was conducted on 5–6 December 2025 at the College of Engineering Muttathara (CAPE – Government of Kerala), organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in association with the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter, with co-sponsorship from KSCSTE and ANERT. The symposium featured keynote and technical sessions by experts from DST, CSIR, ANERT, Reliance Industries Limited, Cochin Shipyard Limited, IIT Palakkad, and IIT Madras Research Park, covering green hydrogen technologies, renewable integration, and sustainable energy applications. A Poster Making Competition on “Clean Energy for a Sustainable Future” was also conducted to encourage student innovation.

The event witnessed active participation from students, researchers, faculty, and industry professionals from across the country. The presence and support of the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter Executive Committee and Student Leadership Team contributed to the smooth execution of the programme. The symposium successfully promoted knowledge exchange, collaboration, and awareness on sustainable energy solutions.

13. Watts Up?, School Outreach – Energy Conservation Week

Creative engagement was encouraged through poster campaigns and student energy pledges, reinforcing the theme “Green Energy, Clean Future.” The initiative aimed to inspire young learners and extend the impact of energy conservation to homes, classrooms, and the wider community. The outreach was conducted with the active presence, guidance, and support of the IEEE PES Kerala Chapter Executive Committee and Student Leadership Team, ensuring coordinated execution across participating SBCs. The programme successfully strengthened energy awareness at the grassroots level and aligned with IEEE PES’s mission of promoting sustainable energy practices.

First place in 2024 High Performing Chapter Program awards

IEEE PES Kerala Chapter has won first place worldwide in the 2024 High Performing Chapter Program awards. This prestigious recognition evaluates how well the PES chapters operate, serve their members, and contribute to the power engineering field. Our Kerala team was rated the best chapter globally, thanks to the dedication of local engineers, professors, students, and power industry experts who work together to organize technical sessions, training programs, and knowledge-sharing activities. It's like receiving a report card where Kerala scored top marks among all chapters worldwide! This achievement puts Kerala on the global map for excellence in power and energy systems, showing how our local professional community sets the standard for others to follow. Kudos to energetic volunteers of PES Kerala!

Kerala Chapter Shines Again with Runner-Up Honor

The IEEE PES Kerala Chapter continues its winning streak, securing the runner-up position in the 2024 IEEE PES Frank Lambert Outstanding Chapter Awards under the Medium Chapter category. Named after Frank Lambert, a visionary leader in the power engineering community, this award recognizes chapters that demonstrate exceptional performance in member engagement, technical activities, and professional development. Competing against numerous medium-sized chapters from across the globe, our Kerala team's achievement highlights the consistent quality and impact of our programs. This recognition, coming alongside our first-place win in the High Performing Chapter Program, reinforces Kerala Chapter's position as a leading force in the international power and energy engineering community. It's a testament to the sustained efforts of our volunteers, members, and partners who continue to raise the bar for professional excellence.
